No dial tone!

Sorry, when Jennifer went to write in the blog, there was no dial tone - or that is her story anyway. No, you all no Jennifer doesn't lie, but now we must head off to see our little Matthew so we will post later when we get back for the two days. I inquired more about high speed internet, more for the fact that supposedly you can phone back home through the high speed for like 3 cents/minute, so that would be nice. Especially when I go home and I want to talk to Jennifer. I have my doubts that we will get it b/c Jila had also tried, but I want to talk to the landlord directly. The frustrating part is that we never met our landlord until this man came for the rent for the month. It was a little awkward, especially when he doesn't speak any english, and with our lack of Russian. Anyway, there are a few things that need fixing in the apartment and we don't know where we are supposed to put our garbage, as there is no dumpster to be found anywhere. Better get going, or I'm going to be in trouble!

Glad that Matthew is feeling better. Love the name. Will be wonderful when we see more of him. I can understand that Jennifer will be lonesome when Michael has to come home. I remember what it was like when I was chasing Elmer around Europe. it must be a similar feeling. Will be nice to have Sarah there. Love to you all and a kiss for Mathtew. Aunt B Uncle E

You may not be able to get high speed internet through the Cable TV if the landlord does not have the cable hooked up "legitimately".

One of the families we travelled with ran into that, but the land lord did not want to admit that they had been "unlawful" due to a cultural pride thing. Once tre translator explained what was going on, the family backed off the land lord.

When we were there we bought AT&T calling cards on-line. For sharing pictures with my husband once he left after court, each day I would post them on Shutterfly so he could see them, and we emailed a lot to keep in touch (and to make sure he was working on the To Do List I left for him).

We were there last year and there was an internet cafe that had a room with ear phones so you could call home and talk. It on was Republik and kind of across the street from the Chelsea. That was not our favorite internet cafe, so we never used teh ear phones. Our favorite internet cafe was the one a couple doors down from the Chelsea, and up a sflight of stairs. We got to know the people there, although we spoke very broken Russian, and since we came in every day sometime we got a very 'reduced' rate.

There's a garbage shute (is that the right spelling?) in a little room opposite the stairwell. It has a big window overlooking the river. There's a rusty door that you crank open (I always felt like washing my hands after I touched it) and you throw your bag of garbabe in there and then hear it make its way down 9 flights. It's really fun if you throw those empty 5 litre water bottles down it.
